The European Commission is striving for a climate-neutral Europe in 2050 and it has set a goal to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases down to 90% for the building sector with respect to 1990.

The European Union Climate Action Plan sets goals to progressively reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This plan includes the Energy Performance Building Directive (EBPD), which focuses on energy efficiency for buildings.
*The Spanish Technical Code of Edification (CTE) establishes that beginning on 31st of December 2020, all new-build projects need to be near zero energy emission buildings (nZEB).
